THE BUSINESS MODEL
NORDEN is a shipping company which owns and operates both dry bulk and tanker vessels. Within dry bulk, we are one of the world’s largest Supramax and Panamax operators. Earlier this year we split our Dry Cargo activities into Asset Management, focusing on cyclical market changes, and a Dry Bulk Operator, focusing on short term volatility where value is created from trading freight. The Dry Bulk Operator is expected to grow significantly over the next years and already now we see results, with volumes averaging 225 vessels in third quarter 2017 compared to 175 vessels in 2016.
The Dry Bulk Operator is split into 9 individual profit centres which specialize on trading in specific regions or with a specific type of vessels. These profit centres are responsible for their own results and can trade vessels, cargoes and derivatives within their allocated risk limits. Having a base of vessels and cargoes open arbitrage possibilities and when opportunities appear, they create value from directional and positional bets. In many ways, the Dry Bulk Operator activities can be compared to a hedge fund creating value from trading freight.
It is the responsibility of Risk Management to monitor and manage market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk and capital risk for the Dry Bulk Operator, Asset Management and Tankers. We calculate daily mark to market values, provide regular and ad hoc analysis of exposures, monitor risk limits and provide advice on risk reduction on risk optimization. With the increasing Dry Bulk Operator volumes we are looking for a new person to join our team in Copenhagen and be a part of the transformation process where Risk Management plays a central part of our daily business.
The role will be defined by the candidate’s expertise, talents and interests but requires the candidate to hold a Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, physics, finance or economy.
